Decorating with Books from Talk of Our Town Design Expert: Olga Adler
Did your home library get larger this holiday season? Whether or not you have a room dedicated as library you can use your paperbacks, hardbacks and coffee table books to make your house more beautiful. So, how to use books in decorating?
Coffee table books are not only for coffee tables anymore and they can help you create beautiful vignettes on any surface in any room of your house. Think dining room sideboard, sun room etagere or open shelving in the kitchen. Pay attention to cover colors and pick the ones that will complement the room’s color scheme. Stack them together for a dramatic effect, then balance the other side of the display with a tall candlestick or vase.
Coffee table books also work great in a bedroom where they can serve as night stand lamp “elevators” when you use night tables or lamps that vary in height. They can also “lift” flower vases, picture frames and other decorative objects in any room.
Even hardbacks and paperbacks that do not have attractive covers can be transformed into an easy accessory. Need an orange, red or turquoise accent? Wrap a couple of books in your choice of fun wallpaper or solid color paper and voila!
Organizing books by jacket color works great for bookshelves and libraries – it makes the book display look much more coherent and organized. To add some interest to your bookshelves, mix the books with great decorative items – picture frames, pottery and natural objects. To mix things up a bit more try displaying some books horizontally and some vertically for added interest.
Happy reading!
