Meet Fiction Writer David Goodwillie at The Aldrich Museum
by Priscilla Matthews
Contemporary fiction will be the topic of The Aldrich’s Creative Conversation on Thursday, July 8, at 7 pm, when author David Goodwillie will discuss the state of fiction today with his editor. Goodwillie’s debut novel, American Subversive, was published in April. He is also the author of an acclaimed memoir, Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time.
What does it take to turn an idealist into a radical? This question lies at the heart of Goodwillie’s novel, a morally engaged, expertly written literary thriller that grapples with big questions about love, loyalty, and politics.
American Subversive paints the story of two young Americans—Paige Roderick, a policy analyst who has become radicalized by her brother’s death in Iraq; and Aidan Cole, a failed journalist turned jaded media blogger. Goodwillie skillfully traces Paige’s unlikely evolution from an idealistic all-American girl to a member of a modern-day Weather Underground. Meanwhile, the more Aidan learns about Paige and her dangerous world, the more he begins to question his own ambitions, priorities, and life.
Creative Conversation is free for members; $10 non-members.
